A DXA (bone density) scan takes approximately 10 minutes. However in order to obtain details and relevant history, it is important to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled time.
Does the test require an injection?
No injection is required. The DXA scan is an X ray technique with very low X ray exposure. About the same as 1 day's background radiation in Sydney.
Where Can I park? St Vincent's Clinic has parking underneath (access via Barcom Ave). Parking is also available in St Vincent's Public Hospital (access via Victoria St). Both parking stations may be crowded. Allow additional time. This is very limited street parking around Victoria St and Barcom Ave.
What preparation is required
Little preparation is required. You do not need to fast and can drink as you like. Wear light clothing and avoid metal in your clothing (zippers, underwire etc.) . If you have had a CT with oral contrast in the previous 7 days this will interfere with the test and you will need to re-book till at least 7 days after the oral contrast. Intravenous contrast will usually only interfere on the day of the test. MRI contrast does not interfere with the bone density scan.
Do I need to stop my medications?
No. Take your medications as usual. If you are on calcium tablets however theoretically these may interfere but in practice rarely do. Ideally these should be stopped the day before the test.
